I have worked with young people since I was seventeen years old, practically a child myself. My thirteen year odyssey with youth began at Kiwanis Camp Casey, a week long summer camp geared exclusively for children with special needs aged 6-17 years. As a camp counselor, my job was to facilitate activities and supervise campers creating a lifetime of unforgettable memories and lasting confidence for all parties involved. I also work as a High School Basketball Coach, serving at three different high schools over the last ten years.Coaching has taught me how to organize and manage practices, develop a strategy in the form of a game plan, and executing that game plan in practice and games. More importantly though, I have guided youth on how to improve time management, collaboration, team work and leadership skills.
My first experience in a classroom was as a volunteer at Geneva Elementary School. I worked with Junior Achievement teaching six lessons of business curriculum over the span of six weeks. My lesson plans and instruction covered business principles, interview skills and resume building. The six weeks of instruction culminated with mock job interviews followed by detailed feedback. In 2012 I began what turned out to be, an incredibly productive and stimulating course of study at Western Washington University. One particularly satisfying experience at WWU was my 32 hour Special Education practicum at Shuskan Middle School in Bellingham, WA. I was placed in the resource room with students with special needs in reading and writing. The practicum also included working in a 6th grade math class as a teacher’s aid and tutor, while also tutoring at risk youth at Dorothy’s House, a non-profit organization. In my student preparation courses, I have had the honor to serve at Showalter, Tyee High School, and Highline High School.
My vision as an educator is to build a safe classroom environment that encourages learners to think and collaborate. It is my goal to promote active learning in my classroom by encouraging discourse, collaboration and discussion. I will also implement reading, writing, and speaking in mathematics, creating an environment where learners are active participants in their education. I envision many instructional strategies to reach all learners including inquiry, interactive presentations and cooperative learning. I will promote movement of students giving students an opportunity to learn kinetically by creating human dot plots, box plots, and vote with your feet. I know to think outside the box when providing instruction, occasionally providing activities that include other classes, working outside, or using other unique arrangements of the school.
